What are AARTO demerit points?
Under the AARTO framework, certain road traffic infringements and offences carry demerit points. When your total reaches the disqualification threshold (15 points under the 2026 regulations), your driving licence may be suspended. This site helps you estimate your total — it does not show an official record.
What is the 15-point threshold?
Regulation 20(6) of the AARTO Regulations, 2026 sets a disqualification threshold of 15 demerit points. This calculator uses that single threshold for all natural-person drivers.How demerit points work →
What is the difference between pending and final offences?
A pending offence is one you have received but not yet had finalised (for example, while you are considering a representation). Only final offences count toward your running total in this calculator.How demerit points work →
Are demerit points being enforced yet?
The demerit-point schedule in the AARTO Regulations, 2026 is in force, but demerit enforcement provisions in the AARTO Act (sections 24–28) were not proclaimed as of July 2026. Treat all calculator outputs as educational until official channels confirm your status.
Learners
Do learner drivers have a different demerit threshold?
No separate learner threshold appears in the 2026 regulations. The published disqualification total is 15 points for all natural-person drivers. Claims that learner drivers are disqualified at 6 points come from draft explanatory material, not the enacted regulations. This calculator does not offer a separate learner mode.
PrDP holders
How do demerit points affect professional driving permits?
Demerit points apply to the holder of a driving licence, including those with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP). This calculator uses the same 15-point threshold and does not model separate PrDP-specific rules. For advice about your PrDP status, consult a qualified attorney or the relevant official channel.
Employers
Can fleet managers use this calculator?
Employers and fleet managers may use this tool to illustrate how demerit points accumulate across example offences. It is not a fleet management product, does not store driver records, and does not connect to RTIA or RTMC systems. Each driver should verify their own status through official channels.
